- Story Mode takes you back to the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games! Mario, Sonic, Bowser and Dr. Eggman are pulled into a magical game console where they compete in a retro 2D version of the past Tokyo Olympics.
- As Mario and Sonic, you can explore 1960s Tokyo and take part in classic disciplines of the past such as the 100m sprint and long jump as you search for a way back home. In the present day, Luigi tries to help Mario, Sonic and the others out of their predicament. To do so, you'll visit the various Tokyo 2020 Olympic venues, gather friends and companions, complete mini-games and take part in modern-day disciplines
